My primary craft is clay - I'm drawn to work with both the medium as well as the engineering involved in in bringing the piece I envision to life. I find that expanding my creativity and skills involves a level of bravery that I never expected. As a result, I pursue other mediums to expand my sense of what is possible. Wood turning is particularly challenging. I am not a natural fan of high speed lathes and sharp tools. But the more I stand in the fire, so to speak, the more I feel I myself open to learning, creating and pushing my own boundaries.
Shapes, textures and color are what draw me to a piece as well as the challenge of creating a pattern that will allow the shape I desire to come to form. I spend a lot of time studying others work to better inform my own choices. My favorite pieces speak to the emotion that birthed them as well as the challenge of moving mud to form.
Elective college classes and a wonderful studio post-college opened the door to pottery and then career and life separated me from the art. This delay brought more patience, confidence and experience which allows the artistic process to unfold with more ease than I ever thought possible. The community that is built working out of a shared studio adds immeasurably to both my skills and the enjoyment of my work.
